All Kinds of Stuff

Well, it’s getting late again, but I really did want to write something tonight.

I watched American Idol again tonight, (surprise, surprise), but I was working later than usual and ended up missing the first two performers. It ended up being all right though, because neither of them were on my “must keep” list. I’ve got three females that I’m voting for at this point; Kellie, Ayla, and Lisa. I’ll let everyone know later who my favorite guys are after they perform tomorrow. I’m guessing I’ll vote for the same ones as last week, but who knows, one or more of them could really bomb out and change my mind.

Tomorrow is my big staff meeting since it’s the first Wednesday of the month. I’m going to throw a beef roast in the crock pot before I leave in the morning with one of those crock pot seasoning packets. When I get home I’ll steam some corn and throw some rice into the rice cooker and we’ll have a really good dinner. If you’ve never used one of those rice cookers I gotta tell you, they’re probably one of the best inventions since cell phones. SMILE! Okay, so maybe I’m exaggerating just a bit, but I absolutely love mine. I got it as a gift a year ago and it’s been wonderful. I like to add a bit of butter into the pot before turning it on and it keeps the rice from sticking together. It’s GREAT!

My Thursday client cancelled, so I won’t be seeing that person until next week. That means I’m home again on Thursday. That’s fine, as long as I can somehow manage to get five visits in with him this month. I’d really like to see that show up on my April check since April 24th is Jim’s birthday and it’d be really nice to do something nice.

Well, I’ve got to pack up my laptop and get that all ready to go for tomorrow, but before I go I still wanted to talk about my latest books. Since I wrote about what I was reading last I actually finished two books. I said that I was reading Acceptable Risk by Robin Cook. Well, I finished that, and moved on to Seizure. I gotta say, I was really disappointed in the ending of Seizure though. It had this really big build-up, and then the ending was, to me anyway, a really big letdown. Just last night I started reading Shock, still by Robin Cook. I think I made it through the prolog before falling asleep No, it’s not because it’s boring, but because I tend to do a lot of reading right before going to bed. It really relaxes me and gets me ready to sleep. It definitely helps that I usually have at least one of the two cats sleeping with me at any given time. Both is best though, except for this morning when Cally decided that she just had to walk on me. Fourteen and a half pounds just doesn’t feel good in the morning. Okay, so it doesn’t feel good at any time, but especially not in the morning. SMILE!

Okay, gotta go. I really need to disconnect my laptop from the work server and get it packed up because I know I’ll be running around tomorrow morning since that always seems to happen. Later people!

Anniversary

Okay, so it’s sort of an anniversary for me. And since it’s almost midnight here I need to write it before it’s too late. SMILE! Today, February 27, 2006, marks the one-month anniversary for me of absolutely no soda. And, the amazing part is that it wasn’t all that difficult. I rarely ever drank caffeine because I couldn’t sleep even if I drank it earlier in the day, but I always liked to have a can or bottle of Sprite or something. I decided to see if by some chance I could give it up, but also I’ve been having some problems with my ankles swelling and I thought that maybe that’d cut down on that some. It really has helped. I was very tempted tonight though to go get some ice cream and make a root beer float to cellebrate, but I figured that would most likely ruin my month and I wasn’t quite ready to do that. maybe over the weekend I’ll let myself have something.

well, I’m going to go for now. My plan is to write more tomorrow evening because I’ve had a couple requests for more information on the books I’ve been reading. Yes, I am reading all comments, even if I don’t respond to all of them. SMILE! So for now I’m going to go to bed and I’ll write more tomorrow.

Oh, and I wish I could attach smells to these posts. I had to make another pan of those tripple chocolate brownies tonight and the whole apartment smells like chocolate!

I’ve Seen It All Now

Okay, I’ve seen a lot of things, but this AP article is totally a new thing for me. I guaranty you that the bathroom in the Greyhound station in Fargo North Dakota would never get this award!

Yet Another Change

Okay, so here I am for the third time today. Now everyone knows I’m totally bored. SMILE!

Actually, I had a really good reason for this post though. I wanted to change my theme again because I realized that it was kind of a pain to find the RSS feed links using the template that I was using, and I wanted to make finding that information as easy as possible. Now though I’m wondering how many people will find my page, um, a little bright? If it’s too much for people let me know and I’ll try something else.

Anyway, I decided to try working with RSS again. This time I’m trying a different program called Feedreader, and so far it’s working about 100 times better than the other program I was using. I believe it was called Accessible RSS, but I don’t remember for sure now. I kept getting messages that it couldn’t find the information and it kept telling me to check my Internet connection. I know I’ve been having cable problems, but not anything that bad. Anyway, Feedreader is working really well so far.

I have to say though, I’ve been trying to get my Bloglines stuff configured, and I must be really super clueless because for the life of me I can’t seem to be able to figure it out. This kind of stuff usually doesn’t give me problems, and it’s driving me crazy that I can’t figure this out. It just can’t be that difficult! SMILE!

Anyway, I think I’m going to go see if my PlexTalk is charged up yet so that I can read some more and go to bed. I’m definitely ready tonight.

Quiet

Well, today has definitely been quiet. I finally motivated myself to do something productive. I turned on the dish washer. SMILE! No, seriously though, I did do that, but I also decided to take a nice long bath. I brought a book in with me and lay in the tub with Cally and the book. Yes, cally insisted on sitting on the edge of the tub where she could watch me.

After that I started just sort of poking around on Live Journal to see what was all available since I do technically have my user account over there. I have no plans to leave Word Press at the moment, but I’m really finding some neat stuff on Live Journal. I joined a couple of the user communities, although I may get off of one of them all ready. It’s supposed to be a community for fans of the show “Seventh Heaven” but there really isn’t all that much happening up there. I don’t suppose it has much to do with the fact that the show is being canceled at the end of this season. Oh well, it’s something to do anyway.

I am now trying to decide what to do for supper. I was thinking of lasagna and garlic bread but Jim had a really big lunch and he’s not that hungry so I’m trying to come up with something else. Tomorrow I’ll either do the lasagna or a roast in the crock pot, either rice or mashed potatoes, and some corn.

Right now there’s a big part of me that wants to take a nap, but if I do I know I won’t sleep tonight so I’m trying to come up with things to do to occupy myself. Everybody and their brother is signing in and out of MSN Messenger, but nobody’s chatting. That kind of sucks. And, I haven’t even checked my Skype list so I don’t have a clue who’s online there.

Other than that there’s not really too much going on. I’ll probably post this and start looking around in the freezer for foodand then go from there. I need to watch my soap for the last week, but if I sit down now to watch it I’m going to sleep through it so I think I’ll put that off until tomorrow too. hey, why do today what you can put off til tomorrow, right? SMILE! Anyway, I’m out of here for now.

Pain in the Neck

Okay, so i actually mean that both figuratively and literally. I don’t think I ever gave a final report on the status of my CPAP machine, so before I get into everything I’ll summarize the story behind that.

So, after everything I went through for the two separate sleep studies and all that, I got a call from my doctor saying that I can’t get a CPAP because Medicare won’t cover me. There’s a certain number, (I can’t think of what it’s called at the moment), separate from the machine’s number, that determines the severity of the sleep apnea. It turns out that my number isn’t high enough for Medicare to cover me. So, after going through the tests, I’m back where I started from, plus we’ve now got some unwanted medical bills that have to be paid because not everything was covered. Then my doctor called to tell me that if I go to see a heart and lung specialist that person could possibly overrule the decision by claiming that the machine is medically necessary. This sounds great in theory, but I’m not going to another doctor only to find out that I have yet another bill to try to pay with money I don’t have.

So, at the moment, I’m taking the cheap way out. I’m sleeping on several pillows to prop myself up in bed so that I can keep the air moving better. The problem is that, over time, I’m noticing that my neck and back are starting to hurt. I’ve got a headache right now that I’m trying to squash, and I am just glad that, so far anyway, I haven’t built up any sort of tolerance to Aleve. I am alergic to Aspirin and Tylenol, so that really narrows things down. I had knee surgery on both knees my freshman year of high school, and took a lot of Advil-related meds so now I have a really high tolerance to that. So, I’m pretty limited. In any case, Aleve works really well for me, and as I’m writing this I can feel the headache easing all ready so I’ll consider that a good thing.

As for sleeping, I may end up moving back out to the recliner for a while if these headaches start getting more frequent. That’ll be rather interesting. SMILE!

Firsts and Lasts

FIRSTS…

First real best friend: I think that would have to be Shannon. We met when we were six years old, and we still email back and forth twenty-three years later.

First school: Technically my first school was West Side Elementary School. I was there for Kindergarten.

First cell phone: Oh man! It was an ancient Startech 1000 flip phone back in 1999. It was small compared to most phones of those days, but I was lucky if I got an hour of use, and even on stand-by time the battery life was terrible.

First funeral: I honestly don’t remember. I try to avoid funerals as a general rule.

First pet: I remember this like it was yesterday. I was three, and my oldest sister came home with a kitten who was the runt of the litter, had been malled by a dog, and kicked around by cows. His name was Hutch, and he was one of the gentlest cats! That cat ended up being close to 20 pounds, so being the runt didn’t affect him any. I think he lived for at least fourteen or fifteen years, and if I remember right he went away from home to die.

First piercing/tattoo: I got my ears pierced just before going into second grade when I was seven. Since then I’ve added two more holes in each ear.

First big trip: This is really hard to remember exactly what was first because we used to travel all the time. I guess my first big trip was probably to Idaho when I was a kid because we used to always go out there to visit my gramma every summer.

First flight: I was eight. I started flying home from school on weekends, so my first flight was by myself on one of those little two-engine prop planes. I’ve been addicted to flying ever since!

First time out of the country? I was probably about five. We went to Mexico. I don’t really remember it all that well though. If we’re talking about trips that i remember, it would be the trip I got to take to Canada during my sophomore year of high school. We got to go up there and sing in a choir with the Ohio School for the Blind and the school in Canada. I still have the audio files from that concert. It was GREAT!

First date: Well, when I was a kid I really didn’t call this a date since I wouldn’t have been allowed to go if I’d said it was a date. It was probably in eighth grade and this guy had a crush on me. A lot of kids called him a nerd, but I always thought he was really cool. His name was Adam. We went to a couple of movies and one time we even went roler skating.

First job: I worked for a domestic abuse shelter the summers between ninth and tenth grade and tenth and eleventh grade. It was through the PIC program. It was a really great experience for me, but it was also very hard and I learned a lot about life in those two summers.

LASTS…

Last person you hugged: That would have been Jim

Last car ride: Last night I rode in a van to and from the casino. Do vans count?

Last time you cried? I have absolutely no idea.

Last movie you watched: Nanny McFee, twice. I loved that movie!

Last person of the opposite sex that you talked to: Jim

Last shirt worn: A plain ordinary t-shirt, which I’m still wearing until I get ready for bed.

Last phone call: I think it was to a neighbor. I was talking to him about my new keyboard and about the guy who he thinks can fix my poor sickly embosser.

Last instant message: Yesterday afternoon I was messaging with one of my committee members who is helping me plan exhibits for our WSVH reunion coming up in June.

Last thing you touched: My braile display so that I could route the cursor to the spot I wanted it to go.

Last Funeral: I think it may have been Jim’s grandpa back in what, 2001?

Last time at the mall: When I went to see Nanny McFee. Does that count since I didn’t shop?

Last time you were excited about something: When I was going to go gambling last night.

Last person you saw: Jim

Last thing you drank: Lemonade. I’m still working on it now.

Last person that broke your heart: I’ve been really lucky when it comes to dating-type relationships, but some regular friendships haven’t been quite so great.

Thought Provoking

Every once in a while I hear something that really makes me think. That’s true of the song, Runaway Go Home by the Gatlin Brothers. Not only is it just a great song, but it also carries a message. I’ve compressed it for posting here, but if anyone is interested in a higher quality version just send me an email and I’ll email it. Check it out and see what you think.

Stuff

Well, I have decided that the new machines definitely aren’t very good if you can’t see them. To make matters worse, I couldn’t hear it either, so I had absolutely no idea when to cash in. I ended up with a total of eleven dollars, which really sucks considering what I brought in. I guess next time I need to make sure that there’s someone who can watch my machine for me while I’m playing.

I’m using a brand new keyboard to write this message. It’s called The Virtually Indistructable Keyboard. It’s made completely out of silicone, and it’s quite unique. It feels like a regular keyboard, and has all the traditional keys, but it’s really flat and takes up less space. One disadvantage is that since it’s flexible I have to make sure that it’s on a totally flat surface which means that I can’t use the keyboard stand for my braille display. Oh well, at least I still have a place for it. I’ve actually got two keyboards connected right now, and this new one will eventually be going into my laptop case so that I can use it when I travel. The keyboard rolls up for easy transport, and it’s really light. It claims to be totally silent, but that’s not technically true because as you type you can still here the thump of the keys as they’re being pressed. I don’t really know how else to explain it. The advantage to it is that if I accidentally spill on it, or if it gets full of cat hair or whatever I can just wipe it down and it’ll be all right. Check out the web site and read some of the reviews. It’s really a neat keyboard.

The company is absolutely wonderful to deal with too. I originally ordered one of these keyboards, but when it arrived I discovered that it didn’t have the numpad keys or the sixpack, so it was missing pretty much every key that I really needed with my laptop. I called the company and explained to them that I had purchased the keyboard online, and that I couldn’t see the picture and therefore didn’t realize that it didn’t have all the keys I needed. They told me to send it back with a note explaining the situation, and they immediately sent me out a different model that did have the keys I needed. And, they didn’t charge me the price difference. How many companies would do that for their customers? Believe me, I’ll do business with them again if I ever need to.

Well, i’m going to go and see if I have any errors in this. I usually have a lot of problems with unfamiliar keyboards, but this doesn’t seem to be slowing me down any which is good. Later.

Facelift

Well, I decided to redesign this page a bit by changing the template. I’m looking for options that make it easy for navigation, and after trying pretty much every template so far, this is the one I liked because it gave some really interesting information. I was hoping for something with a nice blue background like my page at blogger had, but the way they have things set up here you really can’t modify anything. The white background is rather painful, but hopefully it’ll still be easy for people to read. Please let me know if there are any problems.

A Big Day

Well, today is a big day for me. Okay, so not really today, but tonight. It’s my gambling evening! The casino we’re going to has an all-you-can-eat buffet and tonight they’re featuring Mexican food. That should be a lot of fun both the food part and the gambling part. I’m just bummed because I guess these machines aren’t coin opperated, and they don’t have a good old handle. I think they call it progress; I call it sad. Oh well, depending on what time I get back tonight I’ll write an entry to let you know how I did.

In other news, the season of American Idol is winding down. I missed watching Tuesday’s show live, so unfortunately I couldn’t vote for my favorite females. I did catch the show last night though and spent the next 45 minutes on the phone trying to get through to vote. Okay, go ahead and laugh at me now. On my phone I have a total of 13 speed dial numbers. So, as performers sang I marked them down on my list, and the numbers for those I liked went into my speed dial slots. It made it easier to keep calling and calling so that I wouldn’t have to keep dialing the number over and over again. For those of you who are watching, I was really surprised to see Simon appologize to Taylor Hicks in front of America last night, and it’s probably a good thing he did because long after most of the other numbers stopped receiving calls, Taylor’s number was still busy. I have a feeling he’s going to end up being one of the favorites. Even after 10:00 PM Central time it took forever to get in a couple of votes for him. For the guys though, it’s going to be hard to narrow it down. I think I have 5 that I really like. Oh well, I guess America will help me, right?

I hope that there’s no more voting tonight because I’ll have to tape the show again. If I didn’t think it’d be really super corny, I’d bring a radio with me to the Casino tonight. Our Fox affiliate also broadcasts their audio over the FM band, which is kind of a nice thing. Oh well, I guess I’ll survive. SMILE! Anyway, I’ve heard that this casino is really strict about cell phones. I’ve heard that if they catch you with a phone they’ll take it away. I have a hard time believing that one, but I guess I’ll find out tonight.

My work schedule is about to pick up again. Starting next week I’m going to be gone more than I’m home. On Wednesday we have our first Wednesday of the month extended staff meeting, and I need to start working on getting remote access to the server so that I can access important information. Thursday I have a software installation/configuration and three-hour training session, and then friday I’m back at the VA doing group demos and possibly assessments. Things will most likely pick up from there as we get more purchase orders in for my product area.

Well, I should really get going here. I need to jump in the shower quick and get ready for my day. More later!

Memories

If you read this, if your eyes are passing over this right now, (even if we don’t speak often) please post a comment with a COMPLETELY MADE UP AND FICTIONAL memory of you and me. It can be anything you want – good or bad–BUT IT HAS TO BE FAKE. When you’re finished, post this little paragraph on your blog and be surprised (or mortified) about what people DON’T ACTUALLY remember about you.

Amazing

I’ve got to write about this today because I’m really kind of amazed at myself. I’ve never really been in charge of planning an event, or chair of any sort of committees, mostly because I’ve never really seen myself as much of a leader. I prefer usually to have someone else do the leading and let me do the following. Well, that’s not the case right now.

As delegate for the Wisconsin affiliate for the American Council of the Blind I have three main duties.

  1. Attend the 2005 ACB convention in Las Vegas
  2. Give update reports at the monthly membership meetings
  3. Plan, with the help of a committee, the 2006 ACB day/State Convention.

The first two things were easy. Last year was my second convention, and both years I really enjoyed myself. (In case anyone’s wondering, Florida in July just isn’t my thing, so I’m holding out for 2007 in Minnesota. I’m looking forward to my very first train ride.)

Anyway, as usual I’m rambling. The third and final thing is to plan this year’s event, held on April 1, 2006. For the 2004 convention I was the alternate delegate, so I got to see sort of how things ran before stepping into the position of delegate, but this was still a really big step for me.

So, over the past couple of months, my committee and I have been working to plan the event. And, as of this afternoon, pretty much everything is ready to go. I most definitely couldn’t have done it alone, but just the fact that we were all able to get everything together, and do it without problems is amazing to me. Now all I have to do pretty much is be there for the event itself and be a floater.

While planning the event for 2005 I suggested that we implement three break-out sessions so that people wouldn’t be sitting in one room from 9:30 until about 4:00 PM. That’s a long time to sit, it can be rather uncomfortable, and let’s face it, parts of it can be a little boring. I thought that the break-out sessions would give people a chance to get up and stretch, not to mention they could pick the two topics that they wanted to hear about the most. Feedback was very positive last year, so we decided to keep that up this year, and we have three new topics, including Home Safety from The Hadley school for the Blind and a Library of Congress update where people will be able to learn about the upcoming digital book system that will be implemented in 2008.

One other thing that I’m trying to get started, (that really kind of bombed last year but I’m still hoping), is a Friday night social where people can come into a less formal situation, meet our speaker representing the National office, and just spend time together. I’m trying to encourage people from other parts of the state to come, and I’ve even offered my guest room for people who don’t want to stay in a hotel. I’d really like to see things expand to other parts of the state, and I’m really trying to see that happen.

So, we’ve been planning this event, and it’s really cool to see things working out the way they should, and to have things coming together practically a month before the event.

I had to laugh thinking about last year’s event. I worked with someone who was going to do a break-out session on Global Positioning Systems. The day of the session, I went up to meet the guy and he wasn’t there. I called him on his cell phone and it turned out that he was having car trouble and was stuck somewhere between Chicago and Milwaukee. And, what’s more, the poor guy wasn’t even sure if he was going to make it at all! So, between several phone calls, and the little knowledge that I had at the time about GPS, I was able to sort of guide the first session until this guy could make it. If only that could have happened this year now that I own a GPS system, but oh well. It’s one of those things that’s always bound to go wrong the day of any event, and I’m just glad I knew at least a little bit about it.

So, that’s about it for now. I’m just so excited at how well things have gone, and I had to write about it.

My Day

Well, as days go this has been really slow. I’m still trying to get warm from the weekend, and my office was so cold today that we had to dig out an old space heater. I couldn’t feel my fingers which made typing and other things rather difficult.

I’ve been trying to stay busy today, yet be available for any business calls that might come in. There haven’t been many of those though so I’ve pretty much been playing computer games or reading blogs. (I know, I really need to get a life! SMILE!)

Thursday I’m going to go gambling at Potawatomi Bingo Casino. I got my first taste of gambling in Las Vegas this summer, and came out ahead by $3.85. I consider that to be pretty good in Vegas since they’re so tight there. My understanding is that this casino is a lot more generous with their money, so I’m hoping to do fairly well. We’ll see. And, I don’t plan to reuse my winnings. Whatever I win, that’s it. I’m hoping that it’ll be a lot of fun. At any rate, it’s something new and different. The best part is that they have a non-smoking room so I won’t come home smelling like a chimney, or needing to use my inhalers or nebulizer.

Well, I’ve got 50 minutes left until it’s 5:00. I really can’t think of anything to do, or anything to write about either.

Speaking of writing, I used to do it all the time. I’ve got a whole 3-ring binder full of poetry that I wrote between my sophomore and senior years of high school. I used to write during classes that I considered boring. Hey, teachers didn’t know I wasn’t taking notes. They saw me writing and left it at that. I even wrote a book which I finished about a month after high school graduation. I think it ended up being somewhere around 200 pages. I wonder if that’s still on my old Braille ‘N Speak.

Anyway, the reason I even brought this up is that I’ve been tossing around an idea for a couple of weeks, and I’m trying to decide if I should do it, and then if I do go through with it, where I’d start. On and off since I was about twelve I’ve kept a diary. I think in some ways blogging has replaced that, the difference being that anybody can read my thoughts so I generally don’t post anything that could eventually come back to bite me later. What I’m thinking of doing though is taking a series of these diary entries from a time in my life that wasn’t exactly the greatest, and turning it into a somewhat fictionalized, somewhat factual story. In preparation for this idea, I reread a couple of the entries in question. I was absolutely amazed at some of the things I said back then, and it’s amazing to me to see how far I’ve come. Actually, considering what was happening three years ago, (the time period I’m thinking of writing about), I’m glad things have changed. But although I’ve moved on and have learned a lot about myself and others, I still feel like this is something I need to do. Getting started though is always the hardest thing. It’s been one of those nagging things though that keeps coming back. If and when it gets started I’ll let everyone know.

Well, it’s almost time to start supper now so I think I’m going to go. It’s only taken me about an hour to write this since I kept having to answer the home phone.

Mellow Day

I’ve really had a nice day today. It’s been really relaxing, and I haven’t had to do anything. I started off by throwing some sausage patties on the grill and some biscuits in the oven to make those really good sausage and cheese biscuits that you can get from McDonalds. I discovered at that point that we were rather low in the biscuit department, so I’ll be adding that to the grocery list for this week.

I was so cold this morning that I grabbed the warmest set of pajamas that I had, took a shower, and then put the pajamas on right away so that I’d stay warmer.

I finished three days worth of my soap and then started reading a book by Robin Cook. I think I sat in my recliner for about four hours total, and for pretty much that entire time I had both cats snuggling on my lap. Of course I’m sure it helped that I had their favorite blanket on me, but that’s beside the point.

Now that it’s almost 4:00 PM I plan to do more reading and then I’ll start supper. I want to try the Banquet Homestyle Bakes that are always advertised on TV so that’s what we’re having tonight. I got creamy chicken and biscuits. Hey wait a minute, are you noticing a pattern here? SMILE! It looks easy enough. Open a couple of cans, mix a little dough, so on and so forth. We’ll see how it turns out. I’ve got to go up to the Peapod site again though to get the preparation instructions. It’s pretty neat that not only can we get our groceries delivered, but the majority of products include the package information right on the web site, so I can get directions and other information. It sure makes things easier for me. SMILE!

For the rest of the evening I plan to sit back, relax, maybe watch something on TV, and read. TV is of course debatable considering that even with cable there isn’t all that much to watch these days. Oh well, there’s always books.

speaking of books, I’ve been hearing that Robin Cook writes some really good medical thrillers. Aside from the traditional predictable romances that I read on occasion, I really like medical thrillers. The book I’m reading right now is called “Acceptable Risk” and so far it’s rather interesting. This lady’s cousin fixes her up with a Neuroscientist (or at least I think that’s what he is), and they become interested in the Salem Witch Trials of the 17th century. A relative of the lady was actually hung for being a witch, and the Neuroscientist is trying to prove that there may have been some sort of biological reason for the “black magic” that some people saw. He discovers something in a soil sample that confirms his theory … And that’s about all I can say right now. Web Braille has three books by Robin Cook and I downloaded them all last night. It’ll keep me occupied for the next week or so. My audible account gets renewed this week too, so maybe I’ll look up there for something. I don’t want to pay extra for books right now.

Wel, I’m going to go for now. I want to check Zap2it to see if there are any good movies on tonight.
